Free: Less Than Human

Free: Less Than Human

Allen Long’s writing style is unique in that in draws the reader in, tells of sadness experienced by the author, but has an undertone of triumph and joy. Even as you read the chapters outlining Long’s abuse at the hands of his parents, you still know there will be a triumphant ending. I enjoyed this memoir much more than most memoirs telling of abuse. This was a quick read and the pace of the book is excellent. I had no idea what to expect next. Each individual story is told with such imagery it’s as if the author himself is having a glass of scotch and reminiscing with a kindred soul or old friend. I feel as if Allen and Elizabeth are friends I would enjoy having over for a dinner party. I also am reconsidering how I ask for “mom time” as I hope there’s no “Linda” creeping into our lives. (you’ll have to read Less Than Human for yourself if you want more details about that…). Thank you Allen Long for sharing your life with readers. This book is well written, well edited, and I certainly enjoyed the short glimpses into your interesting life. The triumphant tone of the book really speaks volume about your resilient character. Free on Kindle.

Fisheye, A Candid Close-Up of the Narcissist’s Bait-and-Switch Con

Fisheye, A Candid Close-Up of the Narcissist’s Bait-and-Switch Con

This candid memoir shines an urgently-needed spotlight on the narcissist’s con-game habit of using human emotions as collateral. The book starts by sharing details of author Trish Thorpe’s indulgent Hollywood childhood. Her parents, and everyone else in the moneyed world they live in, are thoroughly absorbed with their own narcissistic fantasies, oblivious to Trish and her siblings lurching their way through adolescence and early adulthood on their own. As Trish’s life stumbles into adulthood, she unwittingly duplicates an eerily familiar adult family life, a same-sex family this time, and finds herself incarcerated by money once again. Forced to make a ‘Sophie’s Choice’ decision, she emancipates herself from her adult family. It’s not until she loses everything in the Great Recession and experiences the solitude of homelessness that she’s able to put together the narcissism puzzle pieces that have handcuffed her life. Now more than ever, recognizing and prevailing over toxic narcissism is essential. ‘Fisheye’ deftly illuminates the subject with heartfelt storytelling, humor, and a happy ending. $0.99 on Kindle.

Sixteen year old, Rick Watkinson murdered his father and his step-mother. That is truth. And for that crime, he currently sits in an Alaskan prison. But what brought him to that point? What makes a child pick up a semi-automatic shot gun and shot two people he is supposed to love? ‘Ghost – Honor Thy Parents’ offers a preview into that fateful night and the state of mind of this young boy at the time of the tragedy, all of which is fully revealed in the full-length novel, ‘Ghost – The Rick Watkinson Story’. “Ghost” is the true story of Rick Watkinson, his journey from a tumultuous childhood, to his current stay and personal growth behind the thick steel bars in an Alaskan State Penitentiary. Who is this man and what causes a person to cross the boundaries of humanity? Can these events be strictly traced to upbringing and environment, or do some people have an inherent propensity for evil? Is redemption or rehabilitation even possible? Stripped down to its core, this is a story of a boy who just wanted to be loved. A boy who just wanted to belong, and be a part of a family, whatever that incarnation of a family might have been. He is not asking for forgiveness nor is he expecting us to give it. His life is his life, and his mistakes are his mistakes. He cannot change the past or give life to his father and step-mother. He can only move forward, continuing to find the light in a life of darkness. Free on Kindle.

Free: My Journey Through War and Peace

Free: My Journey Through War and Peace

“My Journey Through War and Peace: Explorations of a Young Filmmaker, Feminist and Spiritual Seeker” is based on Melissa Burch’s experiences as a war journalist for BBC, CBS, and other networks. Her team was one of the first documentary crews allowed in the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War, and she was featured in a New York Times story about her time in Afghanistan. She was just in her twenties when she traveled with the mujahideen, filmed an attack on a Soviet convoy, slept with an Afghan commander, and climbed 14,000-foot mountains in the Hindu Kush. “My Journey Through War and Peace” examines how, through outward action and inward exploration, life can unfold in mysterious ways, far beyond cultural and family expectations. In looking back at this momentous decade, Burch shares why she pursued such dangerous and difficult circumstances at such a young age and continued to live on the edge. She now understands that she was seeking self-discovery, a connection to something greater, and ultimately inner peace. This exciting memoir will resonate with fans of “Eat Pray Love,” “Wild,” and other popular memoirs that describe extraordinary inner and outer journeys. Free on Kindle.
