Salt & Light: Being The Hands & Feet of Christ (In a Cruel and Dangerous World)

Salt & Light: Being The Hands & Feet of Christ (in a cruel and dangerous world)

Salt & Light is a powerful and bold book. In this book, the author provides testimony and discusses situations where the line of duty blurs and where acts that align with personal beliefs and Christian faith become difficult to discern. Poole shines a light on the unsettling issues that are sometimes overwhelming in public service, and gives scripture-based advice on how to stay lucid and consistent with one’s beliefs. This book lifts the veil and shows readers that police officers also yearn to do what is right according to their conscience and religious beliefs. Filled with biblical references, Salt & Light offers material for reflection and a way forward. Even those within a different career field will find insights to keep them connected to their faith while performing their duties. Free: The Bible’s Uniqueness: An Introduction to Scripture

Free: The Bible’s Uniqueness: An Introduction to Scripture
Though every year the Bible is the world’s most popular, purchased, and translated book, the majority of people reading the Bible have never deeply studied it, and even among those who have, many still have numerous, lingering questions, such as: “Who wrote it?” “Is it historically reliable?” “How were the books of the Bible selected?” “Is it possible that some books are missing or that others will be added?” “What is the over-arching storyline of the Bible and its primary message?” “How do we study the Bible?” “Why are there so many translations?” and “Which is the best translation?” The Bible’s Uniqueness: An Introduction to Scripture answers these questions and more. In addition, strong apologetic evidence for the supernatural nature and absolute trustworthiness of Scripture is provided throughout—both to convince skeptics and increase the faith of believers. Let’s learn about the Bible’s uniqueness together with the Bible Teacher’s Guide. Free on Kindle.

Free: Genesis: Discover Your Purpose

Free: Genesis: Discover Your Purpose
The book of Genesis is the book of discovery. Without the book of Genesis, we would not know anything about the origins of our world. Evolutionism and the Big Bang theory are inadequate to explain how the world came into being and the many complexities of the universe; the world, therefore, must be understood from the perspective of the Creator, the sovereign Lord over all things….

As you study this book, there are two important things you need constantly to keep in mind. First, the primary focus is theocentric; that is, God is the major character in the plot of the story of Genesis. He is actively involved in the world He created. He cares about the world, specifically the human race, and He is in charge of everything that takes place in His created universe. Second, there is an anthropomorphic focus; that is, humanity is the centerpiece of God’s creation. The story of Genesis is not only about God but also about humans—the people He created in the image and likeness of His divine essence. Humans respond to God in different ways and God keeps pursuing them to bring them into fellowship with Himself. Keep these two emphases in mind as you navigate the pages of this book, because every lesson revolves around God being the major character and human beings the secondary characters.

Excerpts from MBC Series Preface

The Bible is not a monologue for theological argumentation; neither is it an archive for historical research. The Bible is the inscripturated Word of God. It is ageless, immutable, trustworthy, incapable of being false or misleading, living, powerful, relevant, and applicable to every area of our lives. Put another way, the Bible is an architectural blueprint: a design for living which has practical application for every aspect of our lives. As Paul reminded his spiritual son, Timothy, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work” (2 Tim. 3:16-17). The Bible is a compendium of timeless truths. It is the compass that guides us as we navigate life. It is with this understanding that each of the commentaries in the Motivation Bible Commentary (MBC) series is written.

The practical life lessons contained in each of the chapters of these commentaries are borne out of careful study of the biblical text in the original languages (mostly Hebrew and Greek) and, most importantly, through careful meditation on the texts. In essence, these commentaries are devotional in nature. The approach adopted for these commentaries stems from the understanding that God’s Word is not only meant to be read and understood; it is meant to be applied to day-to-day life. As David declared in the Psalms, “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Ps. 119:105). God’s Word is a light that shines on our path and delivers us from danger, dread, and destruction. The man or woman who cultivates the habit of consistent mediation on the Word of God finds its messages not only illuminating but also didactic.

Because God is sovereign, immutable, and trustworthy, His Word cannot fail. In other words, since God is incapable of committing sin or making mistakes, it logically follows that the Word He has given us is truthful, trustworthy, reliable, and relatable. An infallible God cannot be the author of a fallible book in the same way that a fallible God cannot be the author of an infallible book. The Bible is infallible because of the infallible nature of its Author…Free on Kindle.

Free: Joseph: Trusting in God’s Sovereignty and Goodness

Free: Joseph: Trusting in God’s Sovereignty and Goodness
Two of the greatest truths that Scripture teaches are that God is both sovereign—in control of all events—and good—righteous and benevolent in his character and all he does. This means that even though bad things happen and evil people and forces exist, God’s good plan will prevail in the end. In fact, Scripture says God accomplishes all things according to the counsel of his will (Eph 1:11), and that he works all things for the good of those who love the Lord (Rom 8:28). God oversees and overrules random events, routine circumstances, good works, and even evil to ultimately accomplish what is good, which includes blessing his people and glorifying his name.

This is clearly seen in the story of Joseph. Born into a polygamous and divided family, his older brothers hated Joseph and sold him into slavery. While a slave in Egypt, he was falsely accused of sexually assaulting his master’s wife and consequently thrown into prison. After interpreting Pharaoh’s prophetic dreams and providing wise counsel concerning them, Joseph was promoted from a prisoner to Egypt’s governor in a single day. As governor, God used him to save Egypt, the infant nation of Israel, and other nations during a seven-year worldwide famine. Though evil happened to Joseph, God used it to train Joseph, bless him and others, and glorify God’s name. God’s plan is to do the same through us (Eph 2:10, cf. Jer 29:11). However, to not short-circuit or delay God’s plan, we must trust and remain faithful to him throughout the process. Are you trusting him—regardless of your current circumstances, any evil deeds you’ve committed, or evil deeds that have been done to you? Reflecting on God’s sovereignty and goodness in Joseph’s story will help you trust and obey God more (cf. Heb 12:1). Let’s study these truths together with the Bible Teacher’s Guide. Free on Kindle.

The Seeds We Sow: A Story of the Greatest Kindness

The Seeds We Sow: A Story of the Greatest Kindness

This is a story of three devout Christians.

In his quest to help feed poor people all over the world George Washington Carver was probably most influential not because he was the “peanut man,” but rather because he was a “gentleman.” His protege Henry Agard Wallace continued Carver’s work as the New Deal Secretary of Agriculture and Vice President of the United States. He was likely one of the most misunderstood leaders of the twentieth century. In turn, Wallace passed the baton to Norman Borlaug, who worked in quiet obscurity until he was the surprise recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970.
Because Carver, Wallace and Borlaug lived, so do we. $0.99 on Kindle.

An Ordinary Life, Extraordinary Spark

An Ordinary Life, Extraordinary Spark
Sometimes being ordinary is OK. In fact, sometimes being ordinary can lead to the extraordinary… all you need is a spark.

Life can be tough, especially with the constant barrage of obligations, news, work, family events. It can be hard to find yourself and God through all the chaos. J. A. Richards’ memoir, An Ordinary Life, Extraordinary Spark, takes the reader through her spiritual journey and how she found God in the quiet, the mundane, the ordinary. While the author’s life is seemingly ordinary, her retelling of her dad’s death and its impact on her life shows how God works with and through ordinary people and events to make extraordinary things happen. How many people can say that the post office almost lost their dad? And say that with humor and grace? Only J.A. Richards, and only in this memoir. Although Richards’ recounts several other life events along the way, including her bumpy at-times faith journey, she also offers some tips and tricks to the reader so they can hopefully learn from her ridiculous (and sometimes painful) mistakes, and she does all of it using a humorous voice with a positive message. $0.99 on Kindle.
