They Called Him Marvin: A History of Love, War, and Family

They Called Him Marvin: A History of Love, War, and Family

“They Called Him Marvin is Destined to become an American History of WWll Classic.”

They were the fathers we never knew, the uncles we never met, the friends who never returned, the heroes we can never repay. They gave us our world. And those simple sounds of freedom we hear today are their voices speaking to us across the years.” ~ Former President Bill Clinton

Such a man was 1st Lt Dean Harold Sherman, B-29 Airplane Commander.

“They Called Him Marvin” is a history. A history of war and of family. A history of the collision of the raging politics of a global war, young love, patriotism, sacred family commitments, duty, and the horrors and tragedies, the catastrophe that war is.

One reviewer explains:

“I am a fan of historical non-fiction, and this story did not disappoint. It was sweet, tragic, personal, and moving. Gradually and almost imperceptibly, the story of two wartime sweethearts begins circling the drain of a tragedy you know is coming. The book begins with the ending, but you have convinced yourself that it can’t possibly be the case by the time you get there. I enjoyed every moment, even the ones that left me in tears.

The letters between Connie and Dean provided a fascinating glimpse into wartime military life. Reading the experiences of people both at home and abroad was very engaging. I found myself eagerly awaiting the next letter, right along with the young couple! I highly recommend this novel, and it should be a read in history classes for high schools! $2.99 on Kindle.

Free: An Unexpected Journey

An Unexpected Journey
“My life shows that we as humans cannot always change or control our circumstances. We cannot anticipate all the obstacles in our path. We can, however, choose our attitude, our actions, and how to overcome the obstacles we face. This will define our character, values, and faith.”

It is only through the discovery of another’s life story that we gain perspective on our own.

As a man looks to his past, he finds a wealth of wisdom. John H. Livens was born in Latvia in 1933 and has lived a life across continents, through wars, and with an unwavering optimism for a better future. In his autobiography, An Unexpected Journey, we travel through time as he revisits his upbringing and how it shaped the man, the friend, and the husband he became.

With a strong voice and ethical code, John walks through his early years of privileged life in Latvia, the loss of everything during World War II, and resettlement in the United States. Overcoming obstacles with two Harvard degrees and business success, he began a new life. John epitomizes the unfettered freedom that the United States offers to all, regardless of background. He pursues life’s opportunities with tenancy and integrity.

John shares his memories—from his luck of escaping Soviet capture to his enriched life in the United States. Through each one, family is an ever-present element, and he pursues the ultimate goal of a personal relationship to fulfill his life and remind him of the wholeness from his early, carefree childhood.

NORVEL: An American Hero

NORVEL: An American Hero
FINALIST: 2021 Next Generation Book Awards
Norvel Lee won gold in the Olympics, but he was so much more than just an Olympian!

On a September morning in 1948, a member of the U.S. Olympic team and a Howard University student was arrested for taking a seat in the white section of a segregated train in rural Virginia. The resulting court case eventually made its way to the Virginia State Supreme Court resulting in a landmark civil rights decision. Norvel Lee spent his childhood in a rustic, segregated black community nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. His father was a day laborer for the railroad while his mother expected her children to get an education and become involved in community affairs. In spite of obstacles such as Virginia’s Jim Crow laws, limited schooling opportunities, and a speech impediment, Norvel’s life journey led to exceptional accomplishments in the larger world.

After graduating from high school, he was selected for flight training at Tuskegee
Army Airfield. He served in a segregated unit in the South Pacific during World War II. Afterward, he enrolled at Howard University to pursue engineering and took up intramural boxing. As a pugilist he excelled, becoming the national AAU heavyweight champion. In 1952 he once again was on the U.S. Olympic team, making history at the Helsinki Games.

Norvel married Leslie Jackson of Leesburg, Virginia, graduated from Howard University, and started a family. Later he received several advanced degrees and devoted himself to a career in education. He and Leslie became prominent mentors and sponsors of young people in the greater Washington, D.C., area. He also served as a senior officer in the U.S. Air Force Reserves.

Based on true events, NORVEL is a meticulously researched story about a remarkable man. $0.99 on Kindle

Collateral Intentions

Collateral Intentions

“Collateral Intentions is a veritable gift of living poiesis for the soul…a divinely inspired offering of transparent truth and personal revelation born from a life-transforming encounter with all too often denied, and at times necessarily despised parts of oneself.”

“Without fail, the compelling images, thoughts, and feelings, expressed through the self explorations of a young person straddling the thresholds of adolescence to adulthood have provided potent learnings into understanding what’s most important – how to be wholehearted and genuinely human.”

“…it peels back layers and defenses in one’s own psyche and relays the message of vulnerability that is universally common in being human and necessary in the journey of self-love.”

Most of us tend to avoid the darkness within, but what happens when we turn to embrace it? Join Constantine Dhonau as he artfully examines that which we prefer to ignore.

Collateral Intentions is a contemplative memoir expressed through 11 years of Constantine Dhonau’s journal entries, poems, short stories, and letters from ages 17 to 28. He explores the power of our decisions and the dangers of disowning our pain. His writing spans the gamut of self-reflection, opens the door to our private worlds, and inspires us to extend an olive branch to our darkest self by exposing parts of his life which most keep under lock-and-key. $4.99 on Kindle.

Wide Open

Wide Open

Wide Open is D. M. Ditson’s dizzying account of unravelling in the wake of a series of sexual assaults that left her with post-traumatic stress disorder. When her past threatens to derail a promising new relationship, Ditson flings herself into her recovery and documents her healing in near real-time. Written in the depths of her illness, Ditson shows what PTSD looks like from the inside as she loses herself in time – mistaking the past for the present, the innocuous for danger, and her beloved for a villain. With startling candour, Ditson probes her past to understand how she became so vulnerable to assault, navigates through her trauma, and recounts her excruciating recovery as her body thrashes beyond her control.

Transforming from someone who once burned and buried every one of her secrets, Ditson shares all to offer hope, to prove that healing is possible and to show that love is bigger. Wide Open is the recovery memoir Ditson sought and couldn’t find when she felt crazy and alone, and yearned for someone who had made it out the other end to reach back into the darkness and share the path to freedom. It’s the story of one woman’s hard-fought liberation, and countless others have found solace in Ditson’s words.

“This incredibly brave and powerful memoir is written in prose both luminous and stark. I read it in one gulp, in awe of the author’s willingness to surrender to her experience of trauma and of her generosity in sharing her journey with readers. Wide Open will take you to the farthest reaches of what it means to be human.” – Alison Pick, Man Booker-nominated author of Far To Go and Strangers With The Same Dream $0.99 on Kindle.
