In the Chapter society, transforming drugs let humans live forever. But now a rare creature appears, a young woman calling herself Dell. Her presence confuses the ancients: she has the power of speech and intelligence, but no identifying number. Some believe Dell is a newborn, one of the species that breed in the wild. Powerful members of the society disagree whether they should destroy or use her.
